Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt

Decided: 2016

In brief

Struck down Texas abortion-clinic regulations as an undue burden lacking medical benefit.

The Court's ruling in depth

The Court invalidated Texas's requirement that abortion providers have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and that clinics meet ambulatory-surgical-center standards, holding that the burdens on abortion access were undue because the regulations conferred negligible medical benefit. Hellerstedt sharpened the undue-burden inquiry — a sharpening quickly obviated by Dobbs.
