Justice Blackmun's 7–2 opinion held that the constitutional right to privacy encompassed a woman's decision to terminate a pregnancy, subject to increasing state regulation as pregnancy progressed. Roe adopted a trimester framework and struck down Texas's near-total abortion ban. For nearly half a century Roe was among the most contested decisions in American law — the organizing focus of the pro-life and pro-choice movements, a defining issue in judicial nominations, and (with Casey) the framework for state and federal abortion regulation. It was overruled in 2022 by Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.
