McCutcheon v. FEC

Decided: 2014

In brief

Struck down aggregate limits on how much an individual can contribute across all federal candidates and committees.

The Court's ruling in depth

The Court struck down aggregate biennial contribution limits (though not base per-candidate limits), holding that they burdened political speech without preventing quid pro quo corruption. Together with Citizens United, McCutcheon substantially deregulated the top layer of political giving.
