Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, were awakened by police in their bedroom, arrested, and given a choice between prison and exile from Virginia. A unanimous Court struck down Virginia's anti-miscegenation law under both Equal Protection and Due Process, holding that 'the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State.' Loving invalidated similar laws in 15 other states and later became a doctrinal cornerstone of Obergefell v. Hodges.
