Brief biography

Joe Biden was the oldest person ever inaugurated as President and a veteran Delaware senator who served as Vice President under Barack Obama. His term produced the American Rescue Plan Act, the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act. He withdrew U.S. forces from Afghanistan after two decades and assembled Western support for Ukraine after the 2022 Russian invasion. Concerns over his age led him to withdraw from the 2024 race, ending a half-century career in national politics. New Castle County councilman, U.S. Senator from Delaware (1973–2009, one of the longest-serving in the state's history), Vice President under Obama.

Controversies

The Afghanistan withdrawal in August 2021 was widely criticized for its execution, including the deaths of thirteen U.S. service members at Abul Airport. Inflation reached forty-year highs in 2022. The southern border became a sustained political issue throughout his term. Concerns over his age and fitness dominated the last year of his presidency; after a June 2024 debate performance, he withdrew from the race in July 2024 and endorsed Vice President Harris.

Legacy

Biden's legislative record in a fifty-fifty Senate was substantial. His decision to withdraw from the 2024 race — and the loss that followed — will shape the Democratic Party for years.
